WHAT IS THIS STUDY ABOUT?

High levels of life stress and stress-related mental health problems during pregnancy are known risk factors for a wide range of child outcomes. Identifying protective factors during pregnancy that can help to interrupt the transmission of stress to the next generation is a public health priority. The purpose of the RISE study is to investigate how daily life events affect psychological wellbeing and stress during pregnancy. This study will also examine how these daily positive and negative experiences during pregnancy relate to infants’ early emotion regulation and stress physiology after birth.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Participants of the longitudinal Pittsburgh Girls Study who are currently enrolled in the PGS-ECHO project are being invited to participate in the RISE study. We plan to recruit approximately 95 participants for this study.

WHAT DOES PARTICIPATION INVOLVE?

  • Baseline pregnancy visit: Initial pregnancy assessment completed at the end of the PGS-ECHO P2 pregnancy visit.

  • 10 days of wearing a heart rate monitor and answering daily surveys using a study smartphone.

  • Exit interview: Visit the PGS research office to return the study materials and provide feedback on the study experience.

  • Infant lab visit: When returning for the 6-month postnatal PGS-ECHO visit, we will also collect measures of heart rate from mothers and their infants during a series of mother-infant interaction tasks.
